Built-in tweet-longer function
It would be good to be able to manually override the 140 character limit and, like file uploads, have the full tweet go to a HS-hosted URL, similar to the twitlonger service.
After review, we must decline this feature request. As a Twitter Product Partner, HootSuite must take special care to not violate Twitter’s Terms of Service, specifically articles I-5-A, I-5-D, and II-4-B (https://dev.twitter.com/terms/api-terms)
Please note that while TweetDeck once had this feature, Twitter has since removed it. We must comply with Twitter’s wishes, and will therefore not implement this feature request.

Note this. Twitter bought tweetdeck, then removed +140 char support. Twitter may be the parent of HootSuite. Twitlonger still works as well as other +140 char apps. Use one recommended for your situation. TweetDeck lost a lot of users after twitters take over.

I don't quite understand why it was declined its a service already provided. You would only be providing it inside your own app. You type your message and press enter to generate a URL link and posts it with a small excerpt as a taster for the reader. All in hootsuite.

I would definitely vote for what mike just said. A tweet longer facility built into the app would be a lot easier rather than doing it externally!
Be a great all in one package.

We carefully considered this feature request. Ultimately, we decided that since Twitter has made it apparent message lengthening via URL is not preferable, we would comply with their wishes.

Just wondering, as the submitter of the suggested functionality:
I didn't mean for Hootsuite to override the length of a tweet...I meant something like a Hootsuite hosted service like TwitLonger. The owl already hosts a service for uploading images and making them available for viewing, and I was thinking that a twitlonger service would be an option.
Thank you for considering my suggestion, though.

When I retweted somebody must delete the name of the user because hootsuite truncates the post.

I like the idea of longer posts as well.

Please NO!!! Twitter was created to put your idea on 140 characters. If you want more, open your blog.

If you can't say it in 140 characters then you do a blog post. Simple. Otherwise you're not using social media right.

Mike - I've been waiting for this service in Hootsuite for a while now. With all the new services coming up in Hootsuite, I'm wondering why it is taking so long. I want Hootsuite to offer exactly what http://www.twitlonger.com/index.php/main_new offers.
This is not a service that a lot of people use - but once in a while - it is useful especially when we can't or don't want to rewrite the original tweet in a RT (retweet).
I LOVE HOOTSUITE! But this service needs to be integrated to make it the ultimate most perfect Twitter App!

Folks, Neither I (nor other supporters) are advocating expanding the size of tweets...besides, the Twitter API wouldn't allow for it, anyhow.
What we're advocating, and suggesting, is having a service like twitlonger...where a longer message can be edited, and then the tweet that actually makes it to twitter is shortened with a link to view the rest of the message.

It's not the length of the tweet it's all the hash tags

Twitter limits posts to 140 characters so that you will GET TO THE POINT & not ramble on & on & on, ad nauseum. Please do NOT add more characters!
