In the Contacts section of the dashboard, there’s now an icon that indicates whether or not you are following someone. The “+” icon means you have not followed them yet, and the “-” means you are following them.

HootSuite auto fills the Twitter handles of users you have mentioned already. We’ll look at expanding this to a general user search as well.

Yes I agree very confusing to know if you are following someone or if they are following you - some type of indication would be a big improvement.

This is a big issue for me with Hootsuite. I love the way Tweetdeck on the desktop and the Echofon Iphone app handle this. I find the current method of having to click on the owl - go to my contacts and then scroll through everyone to find a person I want to add to my tweet.
