      Problem
It seems to me hootsuite can't currently, automatically 'check' to see if you are following someone or not, before you click the 'follow' or 'unfollow' button. I could be wrong, but I don't know where to go to find this kind of information.

      Solution
Hootsuite acquires a list of your followers and non-followers every X amount of time and stores the data attached to my profile or specific twitter username. Depending on stress to the network, it could be every 30 seconds, minute, hour, day, whatever. Worst case scenario, can’t we just parse http://twitter.com/#!/twitterusername/followers to acquire our list?
Then, the search function, when bringing in new tweets, cross references your followers/ing list, and it could tell you then, if you are following them or not.
*My needed feature needs one extra step though. Allow me to filter my search results by people that I currently don't follow, or who currently don't follow me.

      Other Thoughts
I get this may be difficult to scale up to those out there with millions of followers, but may work for those of us with < 5k follow (or so), can’t we just do a trial run with some users to test feasibility?
