I suggest you ...

Add an option to disable shift+enter to publish

I see you've declined this idea in the past but hear me out:
Shift+Enter to auto publish is a *shortcut*, not a necessary feature. Most people don't even know it exists until they accidentally press it and blast out a half-finished message to thousands of people.

If Ctrl+Z is the shortcut for Undo in almost every program but you make it the shortcut to auto-delete the file in your program you're going to cause problems.

Twice now I've accidentally published unfinished posts and it's just silly that you won't even add an *option* to disable it for people who will never want/need to use Shift+Enter to save the two seconds it takes to click a button instead.

After publishing my tenth half-finished tweet (to a work account no less), I googled hootsuite accidental enter because honestly I wasn't sure what I was doing wrong.

"Add an option to disable shift+enter to publish" was the first google result after the paid hootsuite ad.

I use shift+enter all the time on lots and lots of platforms and nothing like this has ever happened before. For example, I am using it to create the line breaks in this post.

As others have stated -- on many platforms, including Facebook, this well-known *line break shortcut* is used to avoid preemptive posting of an unfinished message.

It is maddening that you haven't acknowledged this mistake or fixed this yet, especially when it's such a simple fix.

Yes please! I keep sending messages when I merely want to add a new line which is what Shift+Enter does in every other program I use!

Bad choice of shortcut which performs backwards to most other software. I make mistakes all the time. Please switch

How in the world is this still not fixed after 2 years since this question was brought up? I found one answer that will help me temporarily which is to type it in a text edit and copy paste, but that is seriously counter-intuitive to the convenience that Hootsuite is supposed to provide. WHY isn't Hootsuite changing this so that Shit+Enter is a line break????? If it weren't for my company using it, I would NEVER want to use something like this for myself.

This is crazy.....Hootsuite, why would you go against the majority of users workflow. You really need to fix this, is there another workaround that can be used?

Agreed with what other people have said here, I'm so used to using Shift + enter for a carriage return, I've posted a number of half finished posts accidentally,
As I could not find a solution to this, I made one for google chrome in the way of an extension, if anyone is interested in testing, please install and let me know any bugs.

If this is the top Google result for "hootsuite disable shift+enter" then I'm assuming there's no option for it... That can't be true right? RIGHT!??!? Old-school Facebook trained users to use Shift+Enter for a line-break, so why would a Facebook Publishing client change that to Publish!!!?

      • SarahSarah commented  ·   ·  Flag as inappropriate

Agreed! That shortcut doesn't make any sense - you have to use Shift-Enter in many cases for simply adding a single line-break for example in MS Word. An option to disable the shortcut would be wonderful! Reese, your example for Ctrl+Z is perfect.

I feel very frustrated that my request Is being ignored.
8 million people let a company like you stay in the market.
I am looking for another site as I am truly frustrated from your service.

I've already done this several times as well. It's pretty embarrassing and annoying to send out half done posts. Please fix.

      • PatrickPatrick commented  ·   ·  Flag as inappropriate

Please change this. I've been working digital marketing for over two years now, and it still trips me up. I just posted two things by mistake today.

Seriously, ctrl+enter would be fine. alt+enter would be fine. Heck, I'd understand if it were just enter to post, there's enough sites that do it that way. But everybody and their grandmother on the web knows that shift+enter is supposed to result in a non-breaking space. Using it otherwise is just counterintuitive.

Is there a fix for this yet? I see this suggestion was posted in 2013... yet I am still encountering the shift+enter dilemma, and looking like an idiot on my company's social media pages. If there's been an update, I'd love to learn about it. If there's not been an update, I vote for one to take place.

First 3 hours on Hootsuite and I've spent two of them just deleting 30 accidental posts cause Im just hardwired to Shift+enter or adding a break.

Im assuming there's still no way to disable it?

Wow I thought I was the only one having this "Shift+Enter" problem, posting half finished stuff all the time looking like an idiot. Now I see I'm not.
Please, Hootsuite, consider changing this and align with this universal function!

      • M. VooysM. Vooys commented  ·   ·  Flag as inappropriate

I avoid using a single Enter in texts to prevent it from being sent or adding a paragraph tag. So I use Shift+Enter on a daily basis instead, it's part of my mental model. Giving it a whole different meaning in Hootsuite can be seen as user unfriendly.
Please reconsider this shortcut within Hootsuite and prevent embarrassing posts of your users!
