Auto fill @reply
The auto fill for @replies does not cover all the people I follow… A general user search would also be great to have. AND all of this should be available on the iPhone app.
Auto fill user handles when typing @ then the beginning of the user handle. When you are start typing characters after the @ symbol it will populate the users you follow that have those characters in their handle. Then you can click which one you are attempting to mention. This will eliminate having to remember or look up a handle every time you want to mention them.
One feature missing on Hootsuite is the autofill of usernames.
If I try to tweet to someone I follow that I haven’t tweeted before it doesn’t autofill with their twitter handle... I have to look and make sure I type the correct name. This option is available on native twitter, why not Hootsuite?
When I'm typing a new tweet or posting a reply, I like to have a simple function '@' and as I type, type-ahead feature automatically filters names from my actual following/follower list rather than just the last 50 from cache (which I clear out weekly btw). This is an old feature I recall tweetdeck used to have on their mobile app. Twitter's mobile app still has it. Surprised hootsuite doesn't.
Please make this happen. This is a major setback. I keep going back and forth between webpage and hootsuite to copy/paste usernames. Seriously annoying.
Your system just show 1 user twitter based9n what we type. It would be More helpful if it can show some list of twitter names that relat3d to the terms we Sea4ch
On twitter's actually site, when you begin typing an @tag it gives you a drop down menu of people you're likely trying to tag. For someone like myself who operates in eSports, I deal with over 150 hard to remember players' twitters... having the ability to get that drop down menu and only be required to partially remember a player's twitter ID would be invaluable. Of course, this is relevant to others outside my industry as well!
At any rate, the necessity of this is so severe for my particular needs that I don't use hootsuite for twitter because of it.
Hopefully others have similar needs so I can get this update!

allow @tagging of friends/fan pages within Twitter status updates
Unless I am mistaken, when composing tweets in Hootsuite you currently have to go to Twitter and search for a follower you want to mention and copy/paste their Twitter handle. But when composing tweets directly in Twitter, it automatically list the nearest matches when you start typing @... Can we have this in Hootsuite to avoid having to keep going back o Twitter?
The Hootsuite app has had this for a while, but on the web dashboard, nothing happens. When you start typing the @ sign followed by a few letters, it should search your Twitter follows and followers and show you a selection of auto completed suggestions.
Using HootSuite, I try to include the handles of people connected to the 'tweet' -- actors, writers, producers. The auto-fill only gives me five or six selections based on first letters in the handle, and it's never the people I'm looking to include.
I'd like it if you would auto-fill @tagging from your list of Twitter follower/following to make posts easier.
When we are posting on Twitter and type a @ character HootSuit could offer a list os friends. For example: @b will show @bortolotto and others starting on B.
It would be great if an auto suggest came up when you start typing an @tag. At the moment I have to go and check i'm using the right @handle. Perhaps the auto suggest could just include people I follow
I have been a fan of SproutSocial and it has a time-saving feature whereby if I start typing a twitter handle (e.g. @adamr) it then automatically suggests similar ones, based on people I follow, or who follow me, or across all of Twitter. It is SUPER-convenient when you want to initiate a tweet that @ mentions someone, and you cannot recall their twitter handle precisely, but you can recall the start of it.
Many iOS apps do this well (Tweetbot, echophone, tweetdeck) as well as the old tweetdeck desktop app. It makes it much easier to interact with people when we follow a lot of users.
If there's an official (or note) twitter button or link with @username on the page, we could add it at the end of the current tweet to give credit to the author (via @username for example)
Like in Twitter the website, once you place a @ it gets all the tweeters I'm able to mention (of that selected Account)
I wish this worked the way Facebook does. On Facebook, when I type the @ symbol in an update, a list of contacts comes up for me to choose from.
Other apps does this as well, like Twitter for bb, Ubersocial, etc.
Its easier to send tweets to a specified person when i see a list of all the people i am following so that i easy can select one and it stands in the tweet without writing the full name of him
Please add auto-complete in tweet window for twitter names you follow - like TweetDeck and Echofon.
Outlook as the "check name" function that allows you to check the addresses you have entered. If I can't recall the user I am tweeting is @eob1045 or @1045eob I could type one of them and hit check name and it does a quick search on the @xxxx in the box.
Although autocomplete when typing @ into a new tweet is available it only shows recently typed twitter IDs rather than searching my whole list of people I follow like Tweetdeck does. I also find the addressbook difficult to use as there seems to be no way to search through it when looking for a User ID to type a new message or include in a message. I can only seem to page through my followers or those I follow to find the correct ID.
A way to search my contacts to quickly find someone to mention (@) in a tweet vs. manual search.
Hi everyone! I wanted to update you on this functionality.
The HootSuite dashboard should currently offer any suggestions of usernames you’ve interacted with in the last 30 days. We max out this list at 50/first letter, but you can delete a username from the list by clicking the ‘x’ on the drop down that appears.
Recently (July 2013), it was discovered that we had not been saving suggestions for the past 90 days, and you may have seen the impact of this in your browser. It is now resolved, and the expected behaviour (as listed above) is now available.
We’ll continue to have this feature ‘under review’ so that we can evaluate the possibility of including all contacts in this auto-fill.

Any news on this? last update was almost two years ago...

I'm managing social accounts for multiple business clients and considering another platform if Hootsuite doesn't fix this autofill issue STAT. It's *so* inconvenient! Can we get an update?
This would definitely be useful!
This REALLY needs to happen. I've only recently attempted to integrate Hootsuite into my workflow, but it's near impossible to do so because it can't/won't integrate my followed contacts or Twitter handles at large.

Even limiting this to people I follow would be a step down from twitter.com or tweetdeck. It's crazy to not have this addressed after 4 years.
Can you update us again? I don't believe it factors in time. It appears to be just first 50/first letter which you follow not those with that letter who you have recently tweeted. I regularly see names I have never tweeted by handle and don't see those I regularly address.

pending since 4 years?!!! what is the point of voting if you do not change things as users ask

As most people here, I simply don't understand why this is missing from a web app when so many mobile apps have the function.

I don't understand why this is so difficult. Just autocomplete the handles that I follow. It shouldn't be a memory issue except for people who follow thousands of people (the very small majority), so put a cap of 1000 handles in it. An array of 1000 strings, each with a max of 50 characters, really doesn't require that much memory and should be very easy to implement. If it could also search by a persons Name that would be gold, as I often don't remember my friends' handles and want to find them quickly by their real name.

I have run out of votes, but I would give this all 3 if I could. Would be great to have options to choose campaign Hashtags or interests groups.
Hootsuite, I LOVE your layout but this whole "we can't figure out the auto-complete" thing has be pondering a switch to another app. I need a program that will auto complete from my followers and people I follow, not just from the last 50 people I've mentioned.
How is it that Tweetbot can do this in a useful and helpful way, but Hootsuite, that I pay $120/yr for, doesn't have a useful autofill function?
If this has been under review since December 2010, how come not a lot seems to be happening? An update from sombody Hootsuite would be nice :)

I was just griping this morning that Hootsuite (browser-based in my case) wasn't able to auto-fill a Twitter account that I follow but do not interact/mention regularly. It would be nice if Hootsuite (across all platforms) at least would look to auto-complete/auto-fill from all of accounts you're following.
It is incredibly important to be able to auto-fill all names one follows!!! What if I don't speak to someone often and I want to wish them a Happy Birthday? I have a few online mentors who I dont "annoy" with toooo much online interraction but if I want to chuck them a quick question I need to look up their exact handle?? What if I see a job offer/comment that could be interesting to someone I know?? So so many reasons why i NEEEEEDD this feature.... so much so that I have gone back to Tweetdeck.... thanks anyway
As a former TweetDeck user as well... my conversion to another solution is downright painful without an autofill for @'s. I may want to tweet on my mobile out and about and have not had the time to 'do the research' (about who has an underbar in their handle, who spells it in a funky way, etc.) beforehand. I want my app to be flexible and seamless. Please update this for mobile.

For the record, I've been following the update for this issue for months- waiting for the issue to be resolved. Like every other person adding their comments, I still can not use auto complete to work for Twitter from my pc. Please, please resolve!
I have to agree with Duncan. In the last 3 months, I haven't had 1 occurrence of auto complete actually working. Its rather disappointing that it doesn't work. It is 1 feature that is REALLY handy
I don't seem to have any autofill on a message composition window :(
Shame as that was the onnly bit of Tweetdeck that worked well!

Agree with Russ, it is does not consistently auto-fill
